Hi, my name is Maggie Marsh-Nation. I'm the chair of Neurodiagnostic Technology at Baptist Health Sciences University. Neurodiagnostics has been a fascinating career for me for over 30 years. If you like science and technology, as well as working with people, then Neurodiagnostic Technology may be the right career choice for you. Neurodiagnostic Technologist perform tests that evaluate the functionality of various parts of the human nervous system, including the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. These tests help diagnose disorders or injuries involving the brain, and nervous system. We use electrodes to record central and peripheral nervous system responses. We use various types of stimuli to evoke responses from the brain and nervous system. We use magnetometers to record magnetic fields generated by the brain. We perform routine EEG evaluations, sleep studies, nerve conduction studies, monitor the EEG of patients in the intensive care or Epilepsy Monitoring units, and use neural telemetry and video. We also monitor patients during surgery. Baptist Health Sciences University offers and Associates and a Bachelor's Degree in Neurodiagnostic Technology. The associate's degree offers quick entry into the field with basic skills and EEG and nerve conduction studies. Associate's Degree courses are offered online with three weeks of intensive labs and a clinical practicum. Distanced students are required to be on campus, here in Memphis, and for three weeks of intensive labs, and must participate in a clinical practicum either here in Memphis or near the student. The Bachelor's Degree offers more advanced courses in Neuroanatomy, long-term EEG monitoring, Magneto Encephalography, Autonomic Testing, Neuroimaging, and Neuropsychological assessments. If you have an Associate's Degree in NDT, or if you have NDT credentials, we can help you expand your education to a Bachelor's Degree. The junior and senior years of the Bachelor's Degree are offered online and at a flexible pace for working technologists. Bachelor's Degree students may begin in September, January or April terms, Associate's Degree NDT courses begin every September, and need to be taken in sequence. Remember that registration at the university takes time, so apply three months in advance of when you'd like to begin. Neurodiagnostics is a rapidly growing field with lots of job opportunities. With experience and expanded skills there are opportunities for career advancement. Neurodiagnostic Technologists work in hospitals and clinics. Experienced technologist monitor patients in long-term monitoring in the ICU. Advanced training is needed to perform inter-operative neuromonitoring. The Associate's and Bachelor's Degrees in NDT can get you started on an interesting and rewarding professional journey in Neurodiagnostic Technology. If you think NDT might be a good career choice, please contact me. I always enjoy talking to potential students about Neurodiagnostics. Thank you.
