As part of the health care team, diagnostic medical sonographers perform diagnostic medical examinations utilizing specialized equipment to assist with patient care. Hello, my name is Connie Willis. I am the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program chair at Baptist Health Sciences University, the DMS faculty, and I would like to share with you some information about the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Baptist University. The DMS program provides an excellent educational experience, which prepares students to enter the dynamic field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Students are prepared competent entry level sonographers in cognitive psychomotor and affective learning domains. Graduates of our program function as an important part of the healthcare team by performing specialized diagnostic exams, as they care for the patient population of the Mid South and across the country. Our program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education programs on the recommendation by the Joint Review Committee on education programs in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. The program at Baptist University is accredited in the abdominal extended OBGYN and vascular sonography concentrations.
Hi, my name is Abby Kurtz, and I'm an assistant professor in the DMS program here at Baptist University. The DMS program equips students with the knowledge and skills to perform general vascular and cardiac sonography. Students can earn the abdominal and vascular credentials before they graduate, and can earn the OBGYN and Adult Echocardiography credentials after they graduate. Students are well prepared to enter the profession as evidenced by the 100% credential exam pass rates and job placement rate of our graduates. Hi, my name is Mary Grace Renfro, and I'm a faculty member of the DMS program here at Baptist. The DMS program curriculum allows a student to earn a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree with a major in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. To be eligible to apply to the DMS program, students must first complete one year of General Education and Health Studies prerequisite courses. Once selected to the DMS program, students will complete their second year of general education and health studies courses, and then spend their last two years completing sonography courses. All students enrolled in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, learn ultrasound physics, abdominal sonography, OBGYN sonography, breast and superficial structures, pediatrics angiography, vascular sonography, as well as adult and fetal echocardiography. So why study Sonography at Baptist University, we have a faith-based atmosphere where students are able to connect their faith to their professional calling. Our courses consist of student centered education with small class sizes, faculty and staff know who you are. Our learning is inclusive for all types of learners with both in class and online instruction and learning activities. We have hands on one-on-one laboratory instruction with experienced sonographer educators and you experience real life interaction with patients and clinicians within a large, nationally recognized healthcare system. And finally, why Baptist University? Upon successful completion of the required courses, and the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography exams, graduates can earn multiple credentials, including RDMS, RVT, and RDCS.
Hi, my name is Katie Cody, and I'm the clinical coordinator for the DMS program here at Baptist University. Students in the DMS program at Baptist University receive over 1,700 hours of hands on scanning with actual patients in the clinical setting. Students obtain those hands on experiences in a variety of Baptist Memorial healthcare facilities among other sites. Students will experience large high volume hospitals, smaller lower volume hospitals and outpatient clinical settings. Students also get to experience gaining patients in a level one trauma center hospital, multiple high risk OBGYN sites, and various private practices. All these clinical experiences in addition to our scan labs and didactic education, help prepare the DMS students to become entry level practitioners in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography profession.
