Biomedical Sciences
Hi, I'm Dr. Lillian Nyindodo. I'm the chair of Biomedical Sciences here at Baptist Health Sciences University. If you're interested in medical school, optometry school, dental school, even research, the Biomedical Sciences Program is a program for you. So why choose us here at Baptist Health Sciences University? We have small classroom advantage. What does that mean? That means that your professors will be aware of you, and will be paying close attention to your progress as you move on to the program. That means if you struggle with course material, we'll be able to personalize instruction to help you succeed. Another thing is we have articulation agreements with different institutions. That gives you a head start as you apply to different professional programs. One such articulation agreement is with William Carey University, which allows you to be admitted at Baptist Health Sciences University, and at the D.O. program at William Carey. So that means that you get here and also get admitted to medical school as a freshman in this institution. Why would you want to miss that? We also have internship programs and shadowing programs. One major one that we have every summer is with the Baptist summer scholars at the Baptist Hospital. This internship program lasts around three weeks, and you're able to shadow all aspects of the hospital. That means that you're able to even witness surgeries, and even transplants, and look at other things that happened in the back end of the hospital. So if you decide to go to medical school, you'll be able to have a clearer vision of how it's going to be looking at once you go to that internship program. Our partnership with the Baptist Clinical Research Institute allow us to have shadowing opportunities that students can take advantage of.
We also have several layers of advisement. So when you come to Baptist University, you have an academic advisor, who is actually a faculty member, so they know what they're doing. You have a financial aid advisor, who will be helping you navigate your finances as you go through. And then one thing that we add with the Biomedical Sciences Program is a professional advisement. Therefore, you're able to get advisements for different professional programs that you choose. So if you decide that you want to go to medical school, then you have a professor, whose expertise is to keep up with all the changes happening in medical school, and that will act as a advisor for professional program. So we have different advisors for different professional programs. Our goal here Biomedical Sciences Program, at the University, is to make sure that you get to your desired professional program. One of the requirements in getting into professional program is completing entrance exams, such as MCAT, PCAT, GRE, and others. So our faculty have come together to help students succeed in those entrance exams, especially the MCAT. And our average school currently stands at 506, which is pretty great, especially if you're trying to get to med school. So every week Monday afternoons, a faculty member comes and help students prepare for those entrance exams. In addition to the entrance exam, we also have internship programs. One such internship program we have is the Baptist Summer Scholar Program. This program happens every summer. It's a three week commitment that's paid, and it's a marriage, which means that you have to have good GPA, and you have to get recommendation letters from faculty member, and go through an interview for you to be able to qualify for it. But the beauty about this internship program is you're able to shadow all aspects of the hospital. And what does it mean, you're able to even see surgeries, or even transplant and even shadow nurses, PA's, PT's, Pharmacists, and even look at what's happening in the back end of the hospital for you to know that you're choosing the right career. So this is a time when students actually get to see what their future is going to be.
Hello, my name is Dr. Christina Herring. I am the science lab supervisor at Baptist Health Sciences University. I'm here to tell you about our labs. We have very hands on interactive labs. As you can see in front of me, I have several models that we use in our anatomy and physiology labs. This lab in particular is the chemistry lab. As you can see behind me, there are four benches. Each one has four people at a table. So we never have more than 16 students in a lab. They are very small, which makes for very good interaction, between the students and the faculty, as well as you will have in the ANP labs or in the chemistry. You will actually be doing experiments in the chemistry lab and in the ANP labs. You might particularly, for example, be studying the heart. We have giant models that you can completely take apart to look at the heart and see both the inside as well as the outside anatomical structures that you're supposed to know. Similar we have giant eyeballs. We have various different sizes of torsos that we use. And of course, my favorite. This is Mr. Frank. Mr. Frank is our giant skeleton that allows you to not only be able to study the individual bones, but also look at how they can move and articulate throughout the joints. So as you can see, we have very hands on interactive labs, and we hope that you will join us here at Baptist Health Sciences University. Thank you.
Hey there, everyone. My name is Carlos Aguilera. I'm currently a senior here the Biomedical Science program with future aspirations to become a medical physician. Currently, I just wanted to talk a little bit of my experiences here, while I've been a Baptists. The first thing I want to talk about the student organizations here. They are very good at promoting leadership and interaction with your peers and advisors. I'm currently involved, to name few, American Chemical Society, Pre-meds without Borders and the Student Government Association. Like I said, these have been very crucial in my upbringing and experience here at Baptists, as they have shown me leadership qualities that I have grown here my time at Baptist. Next, I would probably think of one of the cool things I'd like to do here at Baptist. It's probably just being in the city environment inside of Memphis, where there's different restaurants, different parts, different attractions that we could go to, or just catch a basketball night-- or basketball game on the weekend with some friends, it's always a great time. And another thing I really love about the campus is how small it is-- You're able to go to any of your office hours for your professors. See students-- sitting around campus-- just work on the homework, and at the end of the day it just motivates you to keep doing your stuff. And I hope that y'all come join us here and thank you.
Please schedule a visit to come see us here at Baptist University. I'll be glad to talk to you more about the Biomedical Sciences program and show you around. I hope you choose us. Thank you.
